5/2 Connective Tissue of Jazz

Connective Tissue refers to music that you get over and over as parts of old songs. The point to understand is that you are learning more that one song when you learn old pop tunes. You are often learning parts of several simultaneously... The handouts contain musical examples we will go over, so you can get the overlap of musical chord progressions, etc. in these great old tunes.

All you need to know to get that cool-cat sound! Just because the ukulele has four strings doesn't mean you have to play them all! Many times, you can say more musically with two or three notes than you can with four.

You will learn how easy it is to finger three-note chords that sound much more bluesy and jazzy than their four-note counterparts. Simple Blues songs will be used to demonstrate this effective, very hip-sounding style. NO MUSIC THEORY NEEDED! NO MUSIC READING REQUIRED! And no knuckle-busting chord shapes to learn—just fun!

5/2 My Three Strums—Jazz Strums from the Master!

The three strums I use regularly are THE SWING STRUM, THE SHUFFLE STRUM, and THE RUMBA STRUM.

We will spend the most time learning the swing strum technique to create a danceable rhythm feel with the ukulele. We will learn the damping technique that is essential to creating the swing rhythm.

Damping the strings is also important in the shuffle strum, which comes from the rhythm feel of the classic rhythm n' blues records of Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, up to and including Elvis Presley.

Last but not least the rumba strum is a bit more complex, but we break it down to three bite-sized morsels, and learn to count and play it together. It comes in handy with 1950's anthems like Save the Last Dance for Me, Three Cool Cats, Lonely Teardrops, and Under the Boardwalk.

CLASS 2 of 2: Some folks attend the festival alone and might still want to dance at our Swing Thing! Learn the traditional vintage solo jazz choreography the Shim Sham choreographed by Frankie Manning. You can go to any swing dance in the world and participate in this group expression of the joy of swing dancing. Frankie Manning was one of the original performing swing dancers from the late 30s and 40s and was in the group “Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers.” He came out of swing dance retirement in the 90s and lead a world wide swing dance revival. Although Frankie Manning died in 2009, his love for swing dance lives on through the Shim Sham. Come join us to learn this classic dance!

Live Performance: John Batdorf

John is a brilliant Atlantic and 20th Century Fox Records and CBS Television composer, songwriter, and performer. An acoustic-rock pioneer, John and his partner, Mark Rodney were discovered by legendary co-founder and president of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun (Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Ray Charles, BB King, The Rascals, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.) The duo was one of Ertegun’s favorite acts and he personally produced their albums at Muscle Shoals. Batdorf & Rodney became staples in the soft rock era from 1970-75, playing regularly with Bread, America, Poco, and other major acts of the day.

After the B&R years, John wrote songs covered by America, "England Dan" Seals, Kim Carnes, and others, then began composing for television, creating scores and orchestral cues for Touched By an Angel, Promised Land, and the TV movie, Book Of Days. He rearranged hits from the Rolling Stones catalog for acoustic guitar and vocals, resulting in two spectacular CDs with James Lee Stanley. He sang back-up for Adele at the Oscars and his voice can be heard in the blockbuster movie, Guardians of the Galaxy II, fronting his band 'Silver's' hit, Wham Bam Shang-a-Lang. His voice is as good as ever and he and will rekindle memories for fans of the 70's singer-songwriter era.

5/4 My Three Strums—Jazz Strums from the Master!
